PAN and partners have been ringing the alarm bells over treated seeds and their lack of regulation for years. Center for Food Safety first brought legal action to EPA over the treated seeds regulatory loophole in 2017, and our current joint lawsuit is a response to the agency denying a prior petition that they ignored for many years. It took another joint lawsuit, which PAN also participated in, to force EPA to respond in the first place.

In December 2020, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, called for Mexican farmers to stop using the herbicide glyphosate by 2024, and also issued a final decree to phase out use of GE corn in the country.

The chlorpyrifos ban we’ve been celebrating isn’t quite finished. And, it is the people who live in the rural areas, where soybeans and corn fill most agricultural fields, who will continue dealing with this insecticide unless EPA finishes the job.
